Shaparak Khorsandi: ‘Love your audience without caring who they vote for’

The standup and author on what she’s learned from comedy, her traumatic gig at Glastonbury and who makes her howl with laughter What made you get into comedy? Benny Hill was my inspiration as a child. I wanted to run about chasing women in swimsuits around trees. Sadly, the 80s politically correct culture swooped in and made this an unviable career choice so more traditional standup seemed to be a safer bet. What advice would you give to up-and-coming comedians? Love the audience. They have paid good money to watch you fill the void in your soul so love them without caring who they are or who they vote for. Don’t start out your career imagining you are going to teach them something. Learn to make the audience laugh hard first. Shaparak Khorsandi: It Was the 90s is on tour in the UK until 10 December. As food and fuel costs rise, there is no doubt the poorest are hardest hit | Phillip Inman

Inflation watchers may disagree on the details, but consensus is that higher prices will persist Inflation is going to be with us for a few years yet. That’s the growing consensus in the City and among economists who believe the impact of rising fuel prices, the crippling cost of imported goods, and labour shortages in many industries will have a longer legacy than first thought. Last week all eyes were on rising gas prices and Ofgem’s estimate that the energy price cap will rise by about £800 in October to an average £2,800 per household. Nadal overcomes Felix Auger-Aliassime to set up Novak Djokovic quarter-final

Rafael Nadal beats Canadian 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Novak Djokovic beats Diego Schwartzman in straight sets Rafael Nadal has contested 112 tennis matches at Roland Garros over the course of his career and he has somehow lost just three times on these courts. But an even more absurd measure of his total dominance lies in how few players have even managed to push him close to the edge, have made him truly doubt. Before Sunday afternoon, only twice over his 17 years, had any opponent even extended him to five sets here. Along came Felix Auger-Aliassime, who stepped on to Court Philippe Chatrier with quality, courage and belief in his capabilities, and he took advantage of a sub-par Nadal to force a fifth set and push him to the edge. But even as Nadal struggled with aspects of his game, when he desperately needed to step up, he soared and finished the match on his terms. Still in the fight for his 14th French Open title, Nadal edged it 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Continue reading... ...
