It is hoped that Foden will be able to join the group on Friday morning and be involved in the team’s preparations for their clash with Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024. The Football Association had said that the midfielder was given permission to leave Germany to attend a “pressing family matter” on Wednesday, a day after England’s draw with Slovenia. Ondrej Duda’s powerful header was cancelled out by Razvan Marin’s penalty and that meant Romania qualified top of the group, while Slovakia went through too as one of the best third-placed sides. With a crowd three-quarters Romanian it felt like a home fixture at times, and the atmosphere was remarkable with noise and pyrotechnics throughout, but these were two evenly matched teams and a draw was a fair result.
