Championship rugby union match abandoned after referee is struck by ball

  • Ampthill v Hartpury called off after clearance hits official
  • Thomas was taken off on a stretcher following incident

The RFU Championship rugby union match between Ampthill and Hartpury was abandoned on Saturday after the referee, Alex Thomas, was struck by the ball.

Thomas, who has officiated games in the men’s and women’s Premiership, was hit by a clearing kick from Hartpury’s Harry Bazalgette in the 28th minute of the game in Bedfordshire.
